anyone use replaytv with directv?

I was wondering if there is anyone out there that can give me some advice on
this. I know directv offers tivo for $4.99 a month and that is a substantial
discount and all but is it worth getting replaytv instead? If so, what is
your experience with it and would you recommend it over the $4.99 a month
tivo offer?

A seperate DVR is more versttile. That DTiVo works on DTV ONLY.

The Replay has a potentially very useful feature (that no TiVo or
integrated unit has): the ability to transfer shows over a network to
a computer (useful if you do DVD recording). This also allows you to
use the Replay as a A/V digitizer, and this will work better than any
computer device.

Of course the DirecTiVo is only $99 (or less) for the HW and $5/month
- or *free* with some packages. It also gives you 2 tuners and a
higher quality image - and 5.1 audio recording.

Yet at least - without hacking. You can hack a TiVo to do this ,and
'TiVo To Go' is supposed to be out this year - but it isn't clear yet
if it will be on DirecTiVo units or just the standalone units.

RTV does also have Send SHow and Commercial Advance if you get an
older unit.

Yes, and you need to consider BOTH the advantages and disadvantages of
something.

And people say the video is encrypted, so all you can do is stream
between TiVo units, not to a computer as the Replay does (and without
hardware hacking). Is this still true?

Expect it just on the standalone units. It would not be useful on a
DTiVo. The signal is encrypted and requires the (DTV) card. Another
major disadvantage of DTiVo, they (DTV) control access to what you've
got recorded.

Accessing the newsgroups yourself is often preferable to "send show",
and "commercial advance" is of limited use (Yes, it's highly reliable
on some shows. Limit your viewing to those shows).

That was hacked around a long time ago. The hacks disable the
encrytion on the recordings.

It depends - if they officially support it on the DTiVo I'd have to
expect they'd also do something about the encryption. The recordings
on standalone S2 units are encrypted too so there will be ways around
it in TiVo To Go.

I'm not really that involved with TiVo (althought that may change if
they produce a HD version). There's still the extra complexity.

Although the Replay still allows this without any hardware hacks
(which could cause trouble when they conflict with a software update)
or additional subscriptions.

I use RTV with DirecTV and my mom has one of the DirecTIVO boxes.
While it's nice to have the all-in-one unit -- one less box to clutter
the entertainment center -- I like the RTV features and functions
better than Tivo's.

What makes them better? I'm curious because I am debating on whether to get
a tivo or a replaytv.

One big advantage is the ability of the Replay to tansfer shows to a
computer. Useful for recording DVDs.

Is that pretty hard to setup? Also, do you know if ReplayTV is planning a
HDTV box?

Easy once you figure out what works. Try reading the group for
suggestions.

No, and somehow I suspect they're not (other than some specialized
unit that's limited to one source). Consider our business-controlled
government that limits the usability of these things (and tries to
fool you by using words like "protection").

I'd still like to have one.

But Tivo is coming out with one or already has one, why not ReplayTV?

I knew about that. It lacks a general-purpose HD input. THAT is what I
said was unlikely.

Integration. The HDTV DirecTiVo is an integrated box - it records the
HDTV signal from DTV as is. The *ONLY* way to do that is to be
integrated - and TiVo is the exclusive DTV partner through 2007. An
external unit would have to take the DVI or component output from the
DTV and *recompress* it to record it. And recompressing HDTV takes a
powerful chip and a lot of RAM and it just won't look as good when
you're done.

ReplayTV could make a box that records OTA ATSC - that's a lot like
recording satellite. You just grab the digital stream and save it.
That's how the ATSC tuners in the HDTV DirecTiVo work, and TiVo also
has a prototype/reference platform for a standalone unit that records
OTA ATSC. The thing is - who is going to pay for a box that can only
record HDTV when it is OTA? There just aren't enough stations to
warrant paying the higher cost - it really needs to also do satellite
and/or cable HDTV.

Recording digital cable HDTV is yet another issue - you need to have
an integrated digital cable tuner and a CableCARD/OpenCable interface
to decrypt the signal. And, of course, a cable company that has
rolled out support for CableCARD. There aren't any of these DVRs out
there yet, the only cable HDTV units are those built into some cable
boxes.
