I recorded some DVD movies and I don't want my kids to have access to it. Is
there a way to password protect the movie?

I don't know about that, but how about keeping those DVDs where the
kids can't get them?

Yup, I already do that. I'd like to have the ability to do the same on the
replay..... to have in a way the kids can't get at it.

Ok, now I got ya. You recorded the DVD to the RTV and want to protect
the RTV recordings and not the DVDs. In that case, no, you'd have to
hide the RTV! What you could do is get a second RTV that networks to
the first. The second one could contain the forbidden fruit but have to
be manually connected to the LAN before use. A bit inconvenient but it
would work.

Instead of a second RTV, check out DVArchive.

I already have a DVArchive server. Check out my post "My DVArchive
Server....................Bragging!"

My kids are smart. They already know how to stream from the DVArchive
server.

Obviously, functionaly the Replay does not have the capability.

You could keep those videos (you don't want the kids to see) on a
removable disk (DVD-R?) and hide the disk.

If you don't want the kids to watch the show you have options.

1: Erase it, get rid of it, and don't allow that kind of stuff in the
house (This is actually the best option)

2: Do not record, just play on DVD, and LOCK UP those dvd's, I mean LOCK
THEM UP (Sadly the kids may well learn lock picking)

3: Record them, transfer to DVArchive and ENCRYPT THE FILE using some
sort of encryption software (PGP) See option 2

4: Shoot kids (Some side effects there like you won't be able to watch
them either from your prison cell)

I like this idea the best. Would also alleviate a whole lot of other security
problems too!

True,,, My original Replay went into "High Security" mode last night,
(Also known as total hard driver failure) it's now in a box with an RMA
on the label (The original box it came in) and is set to return to DNNA

Thankfully I had used DVArchive to offload most of what was on it to my
main computer (i'm watching one of the shows as I type) and I just, and
I mean JUST, put a 3rd RTV on line, 5504 (Same as the dead box) lifetime
activated (unlike the dead box) so I'm not going to loose anything
important.. A Jag Rerun and a couple of Millionair's for my wife, those
are the biggies

You could archive all your movies on a dedicated EIDE hard disk in your
server and enable/disable it in the BIOS.

Of course, your BIOS would have to support Password Protect and you would
have to remember it, but it would not be affected by the operating system
you use.

If your kids are that smart (and not lazy), you will also have to lock
your computer so they can't transfer the hard disk to another computer.

Some (probably most now) hard drives support thier own password
protection. It you have a way to use that, it would be
platform-independant.

I don't get what the big deal is. Couldn't you use DVA and save your
movies to an alternate folder or drive. Then just go to the storage tab
in dva and add and remove the path as you need to. I've got multiple
drives and drives with multiple folders where my shows are saved, I've
got removable drives all with shows archived on them - they're all over
the place. When you view DVA on your replay it will only show your
archived shows from local guide paths that you have added/listed. If
it's not listed you won't be able to see the shows.

That last is not true. You would be blocking the shows from DVA, but
the shows would still exist. They're in MPEG files which can be played
with and of several players available. They do not depend on DVA A
search for "*.MPG" will find them regardless of thier being attached
to DVA.

Kids often know more about computers than their parents do, and could
have no trouble trouble playing the shows.

You could use physical security (put them on a removable disk, and
remove it) or file encryption.
