Unless you are willing to buy an obsolete (like Core2 Duo obsolete) laptop, expect to spend at least a grand. Unless I am mistaken, the cheapest Apple laptop is the base 11 inch Macbook Air. http://store.apple.com/us/buy-mac/macbook-air They are basically the same price anywhere so you might as well get it straight from Apple's site or an Apple store unless you want to try it first and you don't have a nearby Apple store. Even used i5 and i7 Sandy Bridge Macbooks are still selling for more than $600. although you might find one are two in rough condition like cracked screen or dented body or with bad batteries for that price or less.

Yes, almost all of them have 15.6 inch screens with 1366x768 resolution. You can find plenty from almost every major laptop brand like Asus, Acer, Dell, Lenovo, HP, Samsung, Toshiba, etc. Here is a well spec'd Samsung for $500 from Amazon that will be more than enough for your needs (link). It is a last gen Ivy Bridge but the CPU, RAM and HDD are basically the same as the last gen Macbook Pro. Pretty much the only difference is the screen resolution and unless you are a photo editor or just simply like really high resolution (and really expensive) screens then you don't need Retina display or even 1080p. 1366x768 is actually 720p "plus" since it is slightly higher than 720p. There are also some Haswell i5 laptops that have dropped below $500 on Amazon such as this Acer (link) for $450 ($440+ $10 shipping and most likely tax as well). It has 2GB less RAM and a smaller hard drive but it has a much more efficient CPU and a better graphics card. Haswells aren't really that much faster than Ivy Bridges but they are more efficient which means that they will use less power which means longer battery life in a laptop. If you spend $100 more after you get it, you can get 4GB more of RAM and even a cheap SSD. I've seen 120 GB SSDs selling for as low as $60 like this Sandisk (link). So, if you get that Acer, a SSD and 4GB more of RAM, you will have the hardware equivalent of a current gen Macbook Pro (minus Retina Display) worth about $2000 for 1/4th of the price. There are many more laptops just like this in this price range from many places besides Amazon. Right now, I am typing this on my Asus K55A with an Ivy Bridge i5 that I got from Newegg in Dec. of 2012 for $400 then I spent another $100 on an SSD and 4GB more RAM. It is faster than my dad's 2011 15 inch Macbook Pro with the i5.
