"Explosions" or fire are possible with many items powered by lithium ion batteries. It's important to design these items so that they can't discharge too rapidly.
When dropped or immersed in water a large number of modern mobile appliances could suffer this problem. It's not exclusively an iPhone/iPod issue. The clause in the refund offer is fairly standard though the pay-off for silence is usually much greater.
This is the sort of thing you can expect when all companies are obliged to act like psychopaths!

[citation][nom]fortmccubble[/nom]New idea for laptop hunter Lauren... "I'm looking for something that doesn't explode."[/citation]
Then you have to make sure your laptop battery is not made by Sony which is kind of... hmm... tough... (remember the massive battery recall couple years agin?..😉 )

Apple has been doing this for a while. A friend of mine got a new MacBook Pro a while back. It got a virus and compromised one of his credit cards. The credit card company of course didn't hold him liable for any of the charges, but he pursued a lawsuit against Apple for false advertisemet. Apple basically settled immediatedly for a pretty heafty sum but made him agree to a confidentiality agreement.

read this yesterday elsewhere.

of course crApple is going to try and cover it up, they can't make a decent product. First with the parts from foxconn, which was enough to make me not want to own any of their products. Then with the fact that they didn't drop foxconn immediately after the torture/suicide event and foxconns blatant disregard for human rights or just plain decency as a human being. Add that to the reports of iturds bursting all over the place and the fact that they just don't give a crap results in this. APPLE DOESN'T CARE IF PEOPLE ARE MAIMED KILLED AS LONG AS THEY SELL PRODUCTS. So go ahead, buy more crap from them, but don't bitch at me when you find out how deep the rabbit hole goes in companies like this. As for me, I just won't buy any of their products.

Apple will say the Ipod was jail broken causing it to explode, kill a kitten, and take down the internet. They will then sue the 11 year old child for one million dollars in damages.

Get in a bank or a plane and shout :"nobody move, I have a ipod in my hand and I am not afraid to drop it." Or Osama Bin Laden will hijack the next plane with ipods. So TSA should ban ipod from airplane.

Isn't apple covering up exploding Ipods like a drug company covering up a side-effect causing constricted airways? Rare or not, they're both dangerous and possibly deadly. Shouldn't this be illegal? Isn't it already?

with LOL aside, there's what, 2 million Ipods sold within the last year, maybe more? So far only 1 has exploded. so that's like a 0.0000005% chance. Not to say it doesn't happen. Just look at any owner of a 2006 mac battery that witnessed it bulge right out of the case in a matter of moments after 2 years of use. If anything, I think apple has a problem with their batteries once they reach 2+ years of age.

So far only 1 has opted to publicize instead of taking the refund, so let's not try to rewrite the article and draw faulty conclusions. But I doubt iPods are exploding left and right. It's just fun to make fun of exploding gadgets however rare it may be.

"Boss, I've got good news! We only had 1 of our iPods explode this year!"

Tom's Hardware feature article tomorrow:
"US Army contracts Cupertino-based electronics company for 'EHED' (Electronic Hidden Explosive Device)"

I'm starting to think that this article and the Britain installing 20,000 CCTVs in homes needs to be merged.

Who knows, it might be Jobs' ploy to keep watch over those 20,000 fellows to make sure they're not using anything other than iAlphabet Keyboards and Macs!

Am I the only here that thinks this story sounds a little bit of the BS side ? (read publicity stunt) Not to side with apple, or completely disregard that devices with this type of batteries have exploded in the past. But 10 feet in the air? Hissing sounds? I'm not saying its not possible, but this claim seems a little bit exaggerated.

This is kind of brilliant! Basicly threatening the victim with legal charges before he even gets a chance to sue apple for being irresponsible! That's sure to scare the piss out of a lot of people!

what is up with all the iHate?

The problem is caused from damage to the battery. With Ipods becoming smaller and smaller there is less to protect the battery from shock. I agree that the least apple could do is to replace the iPod at no cost without an agreement. However, I do see the point apple is trying to make: they do not want bad press for a problem that is not 100% their fault. I use an iPod every day (in a case) and i have dropped it perhaps 30 times without a single problem.

Just remember, Apple isnt the only company trying to cover things up. Seems to me that this is typical U.S.

The iPod is pretty friggin cool if you ask me but as far as it blowing up? I would surely pursue some legal action. Anyway, Apple makes good products. I am sure that EVERYONE has defective products but because they ARE NOT ON TOP, you do NOT hear about them.
