Apple's Siri is the Birth of Star Trek's Computer

Reminds me of the app Vlingo for Android except more functional.

Is this actually going to work? Or will it be as useful as the voice recognition for Windows 7...

Haha, sweet clip. Season 1 episode, "Conspiracy" - one of the "weirder" TNG episodes, but still good!

Oh, and there's also the Siri thing...yay!

Yes, with the noise levels growing in most big cities, i'm sure we'll be using voice recognition all day long.

How about: "Phone, change to root directory. Sudo su; rm -rf"?

I hope people in my country won't get this - they're annoying enough playing songs on their cell phones all day long... this will be a freakin' disaster.

Sure it looks awesome, but I have been let down time and time again by voice recognition. So excuse me if I'm a bit skeptical.

"iPhone, initiate self destruct sequence, authorization Jobs alpha zero zero one. 5minutes silent countdown.... enable!"

Voice recognition has come a long way in recent years.
Wonder how easily 3rd party app developers can integrate this into their apps.

Magical, Apple just invented voice recognition
....
Many years after dictation software has been on PCs and phone, but ignore all those
APPLE INVENTED IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

/not

I see the same kind of problem here as with text autocorrect, it's going to be useful only to very lazy people who are not doing anything important and even then it's more trouble than it's worth. Not only it may mangle speech and send something inappropriate but it can also text/call/email the wrong person.

Still, props to Apple for trying to innovate beyond bigger screens and faster chips. After all the hardware is there because of the software, not vice versa.

If it's actually useful on the iPhone, Apple will deserve praise. I tried using voice interface in Windows 7, it's a pain in the balls, not to mention worse-than-useless voice search on Android.

Cringe. Somebody had to be the geek that said it. The sad thing is, there are kids now that won't have seen Star Trek TNG, etc. So they'll think you're old for writing this article.

So, you're saying it's about as useful as versions found already on Android phones... In that case, how does Apple deserves praise, whereas the others not?

Apple does one thing really well. When they introduce a "new" technology they make sure it works at least partially well. They capitalize on other company's failings and experiences, make it their own and introduce the "new" product. It just works! One of Microsoft's and so many other companies reason for failing is spending lots of money on a technology and releasing it before it's ready for the average Joe public. People got tired of this and are going the Apple way. Can you blame them?

Honestly, take some time. 80% of their work was just making a front-end for Wolfram Alpha. I'd guarantee that anything not relating to an app inside the Iphone (ie calander, calling, texting, etc...) is just run straight through Wolfram Alpha.

I think it's innovative from the app integration side, but outside of that, it's nothing new. Just like 90% of the 'new features' aren't 'new' to those of us with Android.
