"Arcade" modes in non-arcade games

Have you ever noticed that there are a lot of games - most noteably on
the Playstation - that never appeared in the arcade, yet have an
"Arcade mode"? Were there some games that were intended for the arcade
but just went straight home instead? I suspect "Battle arena toshinden"
was originally meant to be an arcade game. BAT 2 actually did appear in
both the arcade and on the playstation.

It's possible that the idea for any "Game X" being an arcade game was
tossed around early in the development cycle, but I don't think that
results in the "arcade mode" you'd see on a home edition. More likely,
it's done to add a fairly inexpensive play mode to a game, in order to
increase customer interest.

I bought Qix Neo (used) for the PSX a few months ago. It has an
arcade mode. I presumed the arcade version was a Japan-only release.
So is there or is there not a Qix Neo coin-op?

"Arcade mode" doesn't necessarily mean there was a coin-op. It simply means
it's not a career mode or quest mode. It means it's a mode you just play,
not worry about statistics.

Yeah, I've noticed. There is a reason they use the words "arcade mode"
rather than "arcade version". "Arcade mode" means that you're playing
the game with a different set of goals and/or rules, usually these
changes mean more emphasis on action and high scores.
