Hello,

I am an architecture student, looking for a suitable portable work alternative. I have a quad core desktop that works well for rendering, and when work gets really hectic. I just need something to keep productive while mobile.

Imainly use Photoshop, inDesign and Revit, maybe 3DSmax too.

I'm on a bit of a budget, the Dell XPS 15 is probably the most expensive I can go. Is this a good option?

I think Dell will be releasing its M6600 Mobile Precision workstation laptop soon, and when they do I expect the M6500 (which I have) will get some kind of price reduction. If you can wait a few weeks and stretch your budget a little, you might be very happy with an M6500.

Hey Youngster.

How do you feel about the Song VAIO EB? It's $1000, and really has a pack to its punch. Here are some specs:

Screen
15.5" (1366x768)
Processor
2.53 GHz Intel® Core™ i5-460M
RAM
4 GB DDR3 1066 MHz
Storage
500 GB HDD 5400 RPM

I also like the Samsung QX410 for only $829. It's smaller and more portable, so I think I like this one better. Here are the specs:

Screen
14" (1366x768) HD
Processor
2.53 GHz Intel® Core™ i5 Processor 460M (3 MB)
RAM
4 GB DDR3 1066 MHz
Storage
640 GB HDD 5400 RPM

What do you think?

Hi Joelpringle,

I am looking at the same dell xps for same use (architecture programs - and I already have dell studio xps desktop. I'm studying abroad next semester so I need a reasonable portable workstation for a semester).

May I ask what is the spec for the xps 15 you were getting?

Will this be good enough for programs like rhinoceros, autocad, sketchup, photoshop, indesign, illustrator, since my budget is lower? (this is $720).
2nd generation Intel® Core™ i5-2410M processor 2.30 GHz with Turbo Boost 2.0 up to 2.90 GHz
6GB Shared Dual Channel DDR3 Memory
NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 525M 1GB graphics with Optimus
500GB 7200 RPM SATA Hard Drive

Thanks!!!
