Asus Ram upgrade not recognized

I bought Gskill 4gb DDR3 1600 laptop RAM for an Asus Vivobook s400ca laptop. After opening up the laptop and inserting the ram, I rebooted the laptop to find that the ram is not recognized. CPUz and Windows still show the laptop is at 4gb total instead of 8gb.

I tried to enter BIOS through UEFI and there is not a lot of settings, especially nothing that effects memory.

I was of the belief that the ram would automatically be recognized. Suggestions?

Check for any bios updates for the laptop. If the ram was built to spec it should read it. Run crucial memory advisor it free java ap on there web page it read your system and post the ram that will work in your system plus the max ram for the laptop. Most new laptops sell ram it kits of two dimms. Some laptop you can run in single channel mode.

According to the specs on the ASUS S400CA it won't recognize 8GB of RAM because the max supported on that model is 4GB. I followed the link you provided and looked at the memory section under the details tab. I also checked the specs for the Asus Vivobook S400CA-DH51T at http/www.pcworld.com/product/1252926/asus-vivobook-s400ca-dh51t.html and found the same thing. If it is not the -DH51T then the specs are probably different.

That is an interesting find. What I don't understand is why so many of the reviews on newegg and amazon for this laptop always mention upgrading RAM by 4-8 additional gigabytes when it is not possible to do so.

I am hesitant to conclude that 4gb is the max supported ram, because there is an empty slot for ram. There is even a youtube video showing how to upgrade the ram of this specific laptop. I wonder if there are multiple s400-ca's with varying specs.

I don't know if the links below will lead you to the information I see. When I ran the test, I had the unrecognized 4gb ram still installed in the laptop. Let me summarize the info:

The only problem I can see to explain the situation is that Newegg says the ram I bought is 1.5v while the advised crucial ram has 1.35v. I know that changing ram voltage on desktops is really easy in the bios, but I did not see a seting in this laptop's bios. The only other thing I can think of is related to single channel/dual channel. Though I do not know the intricacies of what the channel type means, I do know that this laptop has single channel ram (i think). Maybe a setting has to be changed so that it is dual channel? But again did not see in bios.

You seem to be correct hamitaltintop22 as it appears as though it should support 8 GB.
According to Crucial Memory - http/www.crucial.com/store/listparts.aspx?model=VivoBook%20S400CA&Cat=RAM - 8GB is the max but they don't have any memory upgrades for your system. The 8GB is supported by the ASUS site - http/www.asus.com/Notebooks_Ultrabooks/ASUS_VivoBook_S400CA/#specifications - which also states that it will support 8GB of RAM.
If you haven't already you can try removing and then reseating the RAM module.

Edit: I see you have been to the Crucial site so you can ignore my comment about Crucial.

The S400CA should have 1 available SODIMM socket for expansion up to 8GB of RAM. The 4GB that already comes with the laptop will have the RAM on-board. You cannot adjust the voltage via the BIOS like you could with a desktop, so I would make sure the RAM matches up. The new module might need the extra .15v of power to remain stable.

I had the same issue - bought a CORSAIR 4GB RAM module, followed the instructions on the video on YOUTUBE but the system was not recognising the extra RAM. After re-seating the RAM several times, just when I was about to give up, I found that although it had clicked in and appeared to be perfectly slotted in, the RAM module infact hadnt gone all the way into the slot. I removed the chip and inserted it all the way into the slot and now I have 8GB RAM

I'm really not trying to teach anyone to suck eggs, but have a look to see if you have pushed the RAM chip all the way into the slot. HTH

It may be an obvious question, but did you check to make sure it's a 64 bit OS? The specs say it is, but might be worth checking.

Dattani68 is right! I was also not installing the module right into the slot. it takes putting it in the right angle for it to slot straight in! Also... my s400ca (windows 8 64 bit) takes 12 GB. I´ve added a 8GB module into the slot and it works fine.

I had the exact same problem.

I updated the BIOS to no.209 (the latest at the time of writing) and tried my 4GB Vengence 1600 RAM again. It worked.

N.B.
But I now the touch screen is not working, although I don't know if that was the BIOS Update or RAM

I have the same problem now with my S400CA-RSi5t18. I flashed my bios to 209 but couldn't get the computer to recognize the ram. I have a 4gb crucial module which I bought from amazon since people have succeeded in installing it. I re-sat the Ram many times but did not succeed in installing it. The spec says the RAM is expandable to 8gb, too. Can somebody help me, please?

I ended up returning the RAM before the suggestion of updating the bios. One of the bios updates was supposed to solve the ram issue, but I never installed it so I don't know.

I am not sure a ram increase from 4 to 8 is that useful at all. Your money might be better spent for an SSD. I experienced noticeable performance games with an SSD.

It's an aging thread, but I found a solution to share in case anyone else (like me) goes googling for an answer.

Trying to upgrade an Asus Laptop N550JX from 8gb to 16gb by adding a second 8gb memory card. Laptop is running Win 8.1 64 bit.

I had the same trouble as described - installed memory but it wasn't recognized.

My solution was to upgrade the ASUS BIOS from 203 to 205. However, I don't think that this is what solved it for me.
While in the BIOS manager, I noticed that the option was enabled for 'Fast Boot'. I researched and learned that this mode bypasses much of the boot process, including searching for newly installed components.

I disabled Fast Boot in the Bios and everything then worked as expected.
