My laptop with Windows 7 Proffessional frequently boots to a blue screen error message, as detailed below. Sometimes it will then reboot to the same message, sometimes goes to safe mode menu and sometimes to Start Windows normally menu. The blue screen message sometimes appears once, sometimes multiple times. I have a Seagate 500gb hdd and a WD 500gb hdd. Both work fine in my HP laptop. Eventually Windows boots up and everything works fine. This error is possibly more frquent is something is pluged in to a USB port??
.
As this is to small to read, here is the textand other errors found by Windows repair.
A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

bugcheck 0x0000007E =SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED
parameter 1= The exception code that was not handled =0xFFFFFFFFC0000005 = 0xC0000005 the instruction attempted to access a memory location that could not be accessed. IE the driver was called with a bad memory address.

This can happen for many reasons, Malware attacks, hacked versions of windows, bad driver versions, old outdated BIOS versions. Incorrect settings in BIOS for RAM, bad RAM, bad overclocking.

If your machine has issues booting, I would start by going into BIOS and updating or reset the BIOS to defaults and reconfigure it.
Then run memtest86 on its own boot...

Thanks, Clayto1332.
I have run both of these diagnostics several times, and once for each of them for 24 hours. No errors showed up. The laptop has two memory modules and I have also swapped them into the other sockets. No difference. I think I have eliminated USB as the cause, as the problem occurs just as often with nothing connected to the USB ports as when here is. The problem is very intermittant, and sometimes does not happen for two or three days.ny thoughts?

If your machine has issues booting, I would start by going into BIOS and updating or reset the BIOS to defaults and reconfigure it.
Then run memtest86 on its own boot image and confirm your memory works as expected.
after that, boot into windows and run the system file check utility.
start cmd.exe as an admin, then run the command
sfc.exe /scannow
and confirm there are no errors the utility did not fix.
reboot and run the command again (sometimes malware will unfix problems right after it was fixed)
then run malwarebytes scan (free version) malwarebytes will remove malware even if you agreed to have it installed because you did not know it was malware.

if you still get bugchecks after that, I would post a current memory .dmp on a cloud server like microsoft one drive, or mediafire so someone can take a quick look with a windows debugger.

Note: if you think the problem is with the USB ports, you have to update the BIOS, update the CPU chipset drivers, and update any usb 3.0 chipset driver for your motherboard as well as any special driver for any special USB device. And note: many USB wireless ethernet devices have problems because the setup does not make the new driver the active driver even right after you install it. You have to go back and select it as the active driver or delete the old version of the driver and let plug and play look for the new one on your machine. (just another common problem)

Having virtually given up on this laptop, I decided to recover some data from the drive using a Unix data recovery CD. Booted up with cd, put a blank CD in, and immediately ran out of battery , so the machine shut down. Then powered back on without the Cd and it worked perfectly. It appears that something related to th CD drive is causing a problem, possibly in the connector.
When I want to use it, I just power on with the CD, power of then power on without the CD.
