Neither ... for one, neither Asus or Acer actually make a laptop. Pegatron makes laptops for both of them, tho each has other sources.
The vast majority of laptops on the market (94% in 2011) are manufactured by a small handful of Taiwan-based Original Design Manufacturers (ODM), although their production bases are located mostly in mainland China.
Major relationships include:
Quanta sells to (among others) HP, Lenovo, Apple, Acer, Toshiba, Dell, Sony, Fujitsu and NEC
Compal sells to (among others) Acer, Dell, Toshiba, Lenovo and HP/Compaq
Wistron (former manufacturing & design division of Acer) sells to Dell, Acer, Lenovo and HP
Inventec sells to Toshiba, HP, Dell and Lenovo
Pegatron sells to Asus, Toshiba, Apple, Dell and Acer
Foxconn sells to Asus, Dell, HP and Apple
Flextronics (former Arima Computer Corporation notebook division) sells to HP
$850 is about the entry point for lappies.... I would suggest having one custom built to your needs. When Alienware was a "thing" (before Dell bought), all their lappies were made by Clevo distributors. Clevo distributors are not allowed to advertise prices below set points so ya have to negotiate with one to get the best price.
However Clevo seems to be moving away from the low end gaming market ... what GFX card are you looking for ?. At $800, it's likely to be a 1050 or 1050 Ti
