My new Asus comes with 4G ram. It is expandable to 8G, but I cannot find anywhere that tells me which additional 4G ram I need. Help please?

so who lied Amazon or Asus? as per product description:
Intel® Pentium® mobile processor N3700 Quad-Core processor 1.6 GHz with 2M Cache up to 2.4 GHz - four-way processing performance for HD-quality computing, 4GB DDR3L 1600 MHz (Memory RAM Expandable To 8 GB), 5400 RPM HDD,

Hi, the processor can handle 8GB, but Asus has not made the motherboard to use the 8GB.

Memory Modules c,d
4000 Megabytes Usable Installed Memory

Slot 'A1_DIMM0' has 4096 MB
Slot 'A1_DIMM1' is Empty

so I can't put another 4G in that empty slot?

well, that site has nothing to do with Asus or the seller, so the specs can be wrong or misinterpreted.
Withing the manual, there is no word on expandable RAM.
Asus states that the laptop can be ordered with up to 8GB RAM. It is not user upgradable.
If the seller description is wrong - than you can try to return the notebook.
P.S.
I hated those divisions :)

Interestingly both Amazon AND Best Buy had it listed as expandable RAM. I pointed it out and hopefully they will fix their descriptions..my husbands solution? Give him this one and buy myself another one! Ummmmmm, no...no room in the budget for that!

I just got the same one from Amazon with intentions of upgrading myself to 8gb RAM. Frustrating, now I am trying to decide if I want to go through returning and choosing a new one.

I just bought this model a few days ago myself. Lots of websites claim you can add an additional 4 gig RAM into the 2nd DIMM slot (since the first slot has RAM soldered onto the board). Windows 10 confirms it has 2 DIMM slots and after running the Crucial upgrade app online it shows it has 1 stick soldered on but says its expandable and even offers to sell me the proper RAM for it. I'm going to be very upset if the Amazon description is wrong. I bought this model to save money by installing my own 2nd stick. If I had known this was impossible from the start I would have bought the 8 gig model. If anyone has any updates on this laptop or can point me to the right place to find out where to install the 2nd stick of RAM I'd appreciate it.

This motherboard has 2nd slot for the RAM. BUT!!! You need to totaly disassemble your device and turn uside down your motherboard to acess the slot. Do only if you understand how to disassemble the laptops and don't care about a warranty.

You can use DDR3L (PC3L-) 4gb sticks. 1.35V

Can you send a pic to show what you talking about. All the videos I have seen do not showing anything on the underside of the board.

Many sellers confuse asus X540S with asus X540L. They look same on outside, but inside they are very different. Biggest difference is ram slot, support for higher cpu and possible discrete gpu. While X540L can have soldered ram, as some models don't have it but have place for it, all have ram slot. X540S have only soldered ram and there is no way to upgrade it.

Here is the answer : If your laptop has a free RAM slot , you can upgrade , but for my ASUS (R556L) it's like this , if i put in another 4 GB's of ram , it wont sum the on board module with the external , its becouse the on board module is soldered and it heats up faster and is inefective in high usage ( like gaming) , but when you put in the 4 GB's extra what you get is the same 4 GB's memory but slightly better preformance.
So if you wish to upgrade , go for 8 GB module and it will be like you have 8 GB's of ram installed !
But before you do its critical that you unscrew the back of your laptop and check if you have a free RAM slot ! And check what voltage your cpu supports .
