Here ya go...
Some DVD playing software includes a way of boosting the sound output in the options... such as the DVD player that comes as the HP Quickplay and I think that Cyberlink PowerDVD may do the same
I have come across a program that could boost the sound output of the entire computer before but can't remember where.
I am having the same problem with my new laptop and hope to find a good solution.

I usually just plug my notebook right into my stereo speakers and crank the volume. Neighbors don't seem to like it when I perch the speakers on my windowsill while watching hardcore S&M porn.
