Audio on 2nd Hard Drive Query.

Hi
I've just had a Dell Dimension 5000 delivered and have added an
additional (IDE) Maxtor 80gb hard drive so I can dump audio to it.

I've powered up and am finding the audio is very lumpy and stuttering
off the Maxtor drive. I figured as I was going through the Dell
soundcard (gimme a chance, I only got it out of the box about three
hours ago), the audio might be blowing it up a bit, so I thought I'll
put my old soundcard in and it'll be fine - but before I did it I copied
some of the audio over to the Dell HD and there's no problem with it at
all (in fact it sounds pretty good.

Any ideas what's causing the problem? I have the 2nd HD on an IDE
ribbon which then goes on to the DVD burner. I'm thinking it might be
something to do with primary/slave? Help!

Cheers

So it would appear that the next logical question is: how do you
have the primary/slave jumpers set on your DVD burner drive
and on your new hard drive? But then you already knew that, right?

Clearly you don't want them both set for the same thing. Whether
the HD or the DVD should be primary is debatable, but there is
no question that they can't both be jumpered alike.

Does it have the Max-blast software utility installed on the disc?
There have been reports of problems with that. Also make certain that
Ultra-DMA is enabled on that drive.

I have had problems with cd and hds on the same ide channel, perhaps
because one is running at 33/66 and the other at 100or 133mhz. Try it
with the audio drive as the only drive on the cable.

I've been over on the Dell Forums and posted there too. There's a few
people with the same issues. I may whip out today and get a new IDE
cable and replace the one supplied. Appears that the cable uses 'single
strand copper' to run the signal to the motherboard and it's
insufficient to handle the data stream from both drives. Apparently the
reasoning is that their current HDD's are SATA and not IDE (old tech!).

I have tried Maxblast and the drives are both set up fine.

Thanks for all your suggestions.
