Avast question

ok i just installed avast free. i noticed it dorsnt have a firewall and adware protection and the like. i have no problem paying $40 for two years coverage, but is it worth it or is there other freeware that works as good or better? if so let me know but like i said if the avast complete package is worth the $40 for 2 years i have no problem paying, just dont wana if its not nessesary

Avast would be the last security software I would pay for. Get NIS 2011.

I have no problems with Avast free edition. I've been using it for years and have had no problems. Also, windows has a built in firewall and your router most likely does too. They may not be as robust as others, but they work.

Use Avast free if you don't want to pay for an anti-virus. Otherwise if you are wanting to shell out the money, don't spend it on the protection. There are far better anti-virus' out there to spend money on.

I was having a good run with it until 3 of our machines at work got infected. Even after udating signatures and running a full scan it came up with nothing. Luckily malwarebytes is a little better at finding some stuff.

I'm not suggesting that you don't try it, just be aware that most times it seems like you need more than one tool to be safe.

I know what you're saying about Malwarebytes too. It's almost like they have some sort of side deal with hackers. Why is it their tool only detects some things?

What's funny is we run Kaspersky at work and before that McAffee. They wouldn't find malware for anything, then we'd run malwarebytes on an infected PC and malwarebytes would find it. Once malwarebytes ID'd the malware, the little message pop-up would come up for McAffee. It's like they're saying "Yeah! What he said!" Same thing with Kaspersky.

I have used AVAST 6.0 Free, and Zone Alarm Free for some time now & they provide sufficient protection. With respect to Windows Firewall, I believe when you install AVAST, it turns Win FW off.

Avast left my win 7 firewall running. I did however go into windows defender and turn off real time scanning so that it wouldn't conflict. I instead just have defender scanning every night at 2:00am.

Avast leaves my Win 7 firewall running as well, but it does seem to turn off Defender as it takes over this function.

ok i guess i forgot to mention this is for a gaming pc. i want avast because of how little ram it uses. so should i get the paid version or should i get zonealarm for my firewall or is the one with windows good enough.

The Windows 7 firewall is fine. You shouldn't need anything else.

You have Avast? Then, unless something changes in the unforeseeable future, you're all set for now.

I've been running Avast for the past 5 years. I've had one issue because someone in the house opens every single thing her friends send her. Avast caught it and removed it. I've been to sites that host Google ads that occasional host malware. It always gets blocked by Avast.

I have 6 PCs in my house running Avast.

I haven't had to clean install Windows since I began using it.

You should be good. Once a month or so you may want to give a full scan with malwarebytes too.
