Oh god.... BBS's...
14.4k/28.8k Robotic modems.... squeezing as much bandwidth as you can thru a frickin straw...
Lots of sleepless nights downloading such things as linux v0.1 in 1.44mb chunks that took an hour for each chunk....
Games that you logged in at 11:30pm, nuked a player, logged out, relogged in, nuked the poor guy again at 12:01....
Modem banks of 10(or more)
Commodore 64's running wildcat on cd-rom jukebox machines(I had 5 bay ones)
Wildcat! WildCat!
RoboboardFX, a GUI driven bbs that kinda looked like windows.
Phone bills.... getting people to stay and pay....
Then the AOL cd's started showing up in the mail in droves... things started going downhill from there...

Brings back some memories... I was the sysop of a BBS for many years - started with a 1200 baud modem and a Commodore 64. I had TWO 1541 drives baby! :)

Now this was really cool. It took me a while to figure out how to access a website off of a Google search but then I realized that this application was set up for the time period before the Mouse was widely used. I'm barely old enough to remember that.

Yep. I used to be a SysOp of many flavors of BBS software on various hardware. Started out on a second C64 with a 300 baud modem and 1541 disk drive. Later upgraded the modem to 1200 and much later Courier HST 14.4K which I paid $500 at the time. Final setup before I took it down was IBM 386SX-16, daughterboard upgraded Courier 14.4k to 16.8K (then software upgraded to X2), 155MB (yes megs) SCSI full height hard drive running 4.23 WWIV software.

When I built my new PC running Pentium 90 and had internet access I was able to telnet into another WWIV BBS which is a cool way of not having to keep redialing until somebody finally logged off.

Ah those were the days.

Shouldn't that read:

"It's scary to think that the children of today have never known a time when the Web didn't exist."

Instead of:

"It's scary to think that the children of today have never known a time when the Internet didn't exist."

Because, the Internet has been around since the 1960s.

lol I remember the old BBS days on my old IBM PC with the old 8088
USRobotics was the sheeet back then
my first was an beast of a 1200 baud with Aluminum Extruded casing and good old red LEDs up front
playing Dragonlance games and Space Pirates on my friends BBS on of the first mini multiplayer online game i guess we'd refer to that as a mMO game now

then i upgraded to a 486 dx/2 66 w/ $1k 64KB graphics card and thought that was the fastest thing ever and a 28.8k USR

and i remember Chicago Online before AOL came around

and the hours I spent trying to get OS/2 work and the nightmare of getting an external SCSI 2GB to cooperate with my NEC SCSI CD-RW drive, nothing like the old IRQ juggling game

and creating boot floppies to play your DOS Games

Damn, kids are spoiled now-a-days

wonder how my 486dx2 would compare to my ASUS G73Jw that I have now

14.4K?! I remember buying my first (and only) 300 baud modem for about $60 (used) for my C=128. Going to 1200baud was a god-send! You could almost out-type a 300baud connection.

I still have, a USRobotics Courier modem (14K) external... its almost as my ThinkPad. Easily bigger and heavier than my iPad.
