You can unplug the laptop from the wall and use it on battery. That's why laptops have the battery.

When you are using your laptop at home from power socket, the battery is simply being charged up at the same time, it's not actually being used. It's just being charged up so if you need to use battery power it'll last a fair amount of time.

It's a very simple concept, don't try to make it more complicated than it needs to be!
