I have always used cheap stereo speakers for my equipment. I want to upgrade to a 5.1 setup. I want to use these speakers for playing games, movies, and music through my TV and computer. I live in a small dorm room too. My budget is maximum of $400. For my price I know I cant get super good quality speakers.

I've been reading that the Z906 is the best bet for a 5.1 system on a budget and I found some for $260 that are manufactured refurbished. But I have heard that there are other speakers systems that are better for that budget. I was wondering if the Z906 is my best bet or if there's something better?

Solution
Energy 5.1 take classic paired with a reciever would kill the z906 or z5500. Monoprice 10565 is a cheaper knock off that isn't terrible either. For 400 I would not get pc speakers

Z506 is worse than z5500
Over the years I picked up several sets of Logitechs 5500 series $500+ retail for around $300 from of all places the dell site. The Z906 is the closet thing to them.... if you are patient and wait for sales, you can pick them up real cheap.

Newegg usually has then for $350ish. Here's $328
