This is either paid for product placement or a really poor tech review. Anything Kaspersky does well on a task like virus-detection or internet security is offset by what they are potentially opening your computer to from tracking to downright theft of personal information and files. I'm with many of these people use widows defender and keep your nose clean in the first place. My primary machine is a Fedora Linux box, but for working with clients I use a separate windows partition. Anything I share between partitions is always scanned. If you are going to go to porn sits use a tablet. Heck try it on an amazon fire tablet, you know what they are all blocked, #1 because it is bad for you, and #2 they are full of viruses and malware.

I would like give you some additional information about BitDefender 2019 Total Security. There are some really nasty bugs in this software for which BitDefenders work arounds are unacceptable in this IT experts (24 years experience) opinion. I have used BitDefender 2017, 2018 with good success. I did consider the 2018 version to be extremely slow to run updates, but the real problems showed up with their 2019 version.

A large number of HTTPS web sites would be blocked by BitDefender 2019 because of an alleged problem with that site's security certificate. This was odd as the vast majority of those web pages blocked were bank, financial, and bill payment web pages. This problem happens not only in the latest versions of FireFox, but also in Google Chrome and BitDefenders Safepay browser.

After contacting BitDefender tech support about this, they advised that I should merely white page those URL's that were having problems. With the potential of 30-40 web sites that we use affected, and the futher possibility of 3 - 4 URL's per website that would have to be whitelisted, this was an unacceptable fix. Not withstanding that security was being partially turned off to fix the problem.

Their second suggestion was that I would need to turn off Master Password in Firefox thereby exposing my stored passwords, uninstall and reinstall BitDefender to correct the problem. I'll say that again, TURN OFF security of my passwords while allowing pretty much unlimited access to my computer during an installation where I have no possibility of monitoring what they are doing. Second, while I'm not a programmer, I fail to see how this would fix the problem of blocked web page problem from occuring in Google Chrome and BitDefender Safepay. As far as I'm concerned this is an even more unacceptable fix that just whitelisting URL's as a workaround.

The last problem I've encountered with BitDefender 2019 is how agonizingly slow updates have become. I've seen them take as much an hour and a half to complete. During that time hard disk access on the computer is so high that it's nearly impossible to do anything else on the computer. I am forced to wonder exactly the software is doing to my computer?

Considering that BitDefender is a Romanian company I have to wonder just exactly what it is they are doing?
I stopped using Kaspersky, also a Russian company, for similar reasons.

Excellent read, I just passed this onto a colleague who was doing a little research on this topic. And he actually bought me lunch because I found it for him. So I should thank you for the free lunch I got.

We certainly do take it into consideration: https://www.tomsguide.com/us/is-kaspersky-safe,news-25983.html

Substantial proof for the allegations against Kaspersky Lab has never been made public. There was a leak campaign that created stories in the Washington Post, NY Times and Wall St Journal, but nothing in the stories was close to a smoking gun.

Just don't use it when you're actually in China.

We don't get paid to place products. Kaspersky makes really good antivirus products.

Romania is a member of NATO and the European Union. So are the Czech Republic and Spain. Norton is owned by Symantec, which is an American company based in California and traded on NASDAQ.

Windows Defender is indeed getting much better. Five years ago, you'd have been crazy to use nothing else, but that's no longer the case.
