Best bang for buck surround sound system

Solution
Depending on the size of the room for the HTPC, you may want to consider just a decent set of PC speakers. For movie viewing in my old 12'x15' room, my set of Logitech X-530s 5.1 surround was more than enough. For something larger, though, you'd probably want to go with a full 5.1 receiver Home Theater in a Box (HTIB) set up. Unfortunately, those found for around $150 generally are not worth the cost.

I know it's outside you're desired budget, but if you've got a larger area to cover, then the least I'd go with would be something like this Onkyo HT-S3500 5.1 system.

It's going to be used in a home theater PC to watch movies and YouTube videos.

I would go with wolfshadw options, Logitech sucks at making good quality surround sound systems

find a store you can go to to listen to them first. From what i can tell logitech have gone downhill, tried both the thx systems recently, which were received favorable reviews, and they both sound like total crap. Sticking with my old x-230 model which sounds significantly better. At this stage i think your best bet is some speakers from Microlab or possibly Edifer. Again, hard to tell unless you hear them first hand, as reviewers these days must be half deaf.

if you do not have the cash for anything better than $150 and absolutely require surround sound then the z506 is fine.

while i certainly agree the older systems sounded better (i had an old x530 which was great) the newer systems arent horrible and are fine for non audiophile who just want basic sound. perhaps not the best choice for your budget but they are available practically everywhere so you can give them a listen.

my personal suggestion though would be to go with a decent 2.0 or 2.1 system instead. you can get some better speakers for higher quality sound at the expense of not having surround sound. your choice.
