Pentium 4M for low power, Mobile AMD64 for high performance.

"Centrino" a brand name that Intel licenses to vendors who use the Pentium
4M and some other specific parts--it's not a processor.

Are there still shops with this hot and loud
P4 pseudo "notebooks"

End of September, I saw in Munich Germany
the first time a big P4 free notebook show room.

Not one single P4! The fail construction is dead1

"Centrino" machines come with PentiumM processors only, not Pentium4M. The
Pentium4M and PentiumM are completely different processors.

PentiumM processors use the least power and have the longest runtime on
battery.

You are of course correct--what I get for posting before I had my coffee or
after bedtime or whenever the Hell I posted that.

However the PentiumM is not unique to Centrino--Centrino machines have the
Pentium M and also one of the Intel 855 chipsets and an Intel Pro/Wireless
network connection. The Pro/Wireless for a long time was a deal breaker
and a lot of vendors chose to forego the "Centrino" designation on at least
some models to get support for more popular Wifi standards than the ones
that Intel supported. Now Intel supports a, b, and g, so it's less of an
issue.

It's maybe a good idea to think before writing.

The Pentium-M - called Centrino combined with other Intel components -
has absolut nothing to do with the fail construction P4

I'm sorry, but I don't understand what you mean when you say "fail
construction P4". Did the fab fall down or something?

These days I would probably go with Pentium M unless you care not at
all about battery life and care very much about CPU speed. Pentium M
performance these days is very good but still a little more expensive
than a Pentium 4-based laptop.

Laptops designed with Pentium M (not to be confused with Pentium 4M,
an entirely different chip) tend to be best for battery life, heat, and
weight. This is not assured, so you should instead look at the laptop
specs.

Centrino is simply an Intel branding of a laptop design platform;
Centrino includes a Pentium M CPU.

Celeron M is a cheaper version of the Pentium M.

No single P4 there, because there new toy to sell, to make money - Centrino,
just look at prices and see difference. If you want pay twice more for
couple decibels less, well...your choise (I am talking about good brand, no
noname 'bargains').

And after year or so there will appear new one - Centrino_blablabla, then
will you say that current Centrino was bad contruction? You must be very
flexible ;-)

Actually, the PentiumM has been around for a while. It's not particularly
new.

For example Toshiba. Old model with P4 you can buy for, lets say 2300-2700
$AU whereas new Toshiba, G10/G100 or so, with P-M 2G cost almost 6000 $AU.
If at least it could beat P4 in cpu performence (like 3d rendering), but it
still cannot. Well, maybe version P-M 2.6G for 8 grands will do ;-)

It is fantastic that it generates less noise and heat and it works for such
a long time, but is it worth extra 2-3 grands? I guess, it depends on a
person and its pocket. Personaly I have better idea to spend this money.

That is true and again it depends on how much do you really need extra hour.
I agree, if it is crucial, one can go for P-M.

Here I am smoking to Ronald. He so easly catches new stuff forgeting that
this fantastic new technology could not exist without old one and not
necessary must be couple class better only because is new. Don't throw away
old stuff. New Jaguars cannot much new ones. New, super-hiper audio gear
cannot much 10-15 years old, hi-end audio gear. Even if you think, I
should.

Etc etc etc

And here I even don't mention marketing which can averege user with averege
knowledge in a area convince to everything.

This has nothing to do with Intel or the price of processors. Newegg has a
Pentium-M Toshiba for $1199, while their cheapest Pentium 4 Mobile Toshiba
is $1379.

But you don't buy only procesor, usualy people buy whole laptop and here we
end up with Centrino platform ;-)

Of course it depends on confriguration, but from what I see in shops similar
configuration for Centrino is usually 50% more expensive. And the more cool,
flat, light is machine the more expensive.

And of course this has nothing to do with Intel because it has to do with
marketing and fashion and maybe a little more with real demand and usage.

In the United States, the difference in price between a
Centrino/Pentium M laptop and a P4 laptop is nowhere near 50% - maybe
20%. Of course, Pentium M allows for a whole new breed of light,
compact laptop not even possible with a P4, so you can't really
compare those lighter machines with the more traditional Pentium
M-based laptops.

Marketing is of course why Intel picked "Centrino" not "Pentium M" to
push to customers. They saw a big demand for lighter, cooler,
wireless, longer-lasting-battery notebooks and marketed to that need.

You can get laptops with the Pentium M that do not have the Centrino label.
Note again--the Pentium M Toshiba is $180 _less_ than the Pentium 4 model.
That's for hardware in stock for immediate delivery.

I paid less for my Athlon-64 machine than Toshiba gets for that Pentium 4
box.

Yes, and again if you need lighter machine. Question in this topic was about
"the best processor". It not necessary has to mean the lighter and coolest
one, hasn't it?

If you aware of your need, yes go for it, you really need it.

But I am not sure if almaha_1980@hotmail.com is not the same case as my
friend. He asked me for advice in choosing laptop for him. I asked: why
laptop, any particular reason? And answer was: not really, I just like it,
it is so small.

Yes, you can go this way ;-)
