Best resolution for vr?

I am trying to get into VR... either using my phone or building one. Buying a HMD is just way too much for me. Which brings me to my question. What resolution is best for vr? Of course the easy answer is 4k but my computer cannot handle 4k period. So then I thought 1440p... but rather than guessing I was hoping some smarty pants out there could give me a hand! :)

There's no bad idea or comment, I'd love to hear what you have to say.

You realize that 1080x1200 per eye means overall the display is higher than 1080p? 1080x1200 on both eyes means the overall res is 2400x1080 (or 2160x1200, I'm not sure which is width, but it doesn't matter because both are higher than 1080p)

The best resolution is going to be whatever resolution you can drive at your chosen detail settings at or above a refresh rate fast enough to prevent side effects such as motion sickness.

Problem with that is, using an LCD, you will attain best picture quality on the screen by using it's native resolution. There's little point having a 4k screen, of any size, and just using it for 720p or 960p, etc.

I am planning on getting a GTX 1060. And it preforms pretty well at 1080p. But I am really worried about the whole talk about the screen door effect, and just having a bad overall experience. But 1080p is a higher resolution then the Oculus and the Vive (1080x1200 per eye), so that puts it into perspective.

Do you think 1080p per eye is good enough? Will I be lacking? Or is this absolutely overkill and I am going to love this?

How are you expecting to drive better resolution than the commercial products, with lesser equipment? Unless you have something revolutionary up your sleeve, there's pretty legitimate reasons why the entry level equipment to a good VR experience is still considered a bit high.

The leading industry products are running 1080x1200 per eye, and they are controlling the market because a) not everyone is going build their own hmd, and b) there hasn't been any hdmi to mipi display for people to use until just recently. With the technology now available on a consumer level, people with enough time and patience can throw together a great HMD without a terrible price tag. With some free open source vr tracking softwares, I can use infrared leds to track movement, use creotech's mipi to hdmi interface, and buy some stupid cheap phone displays for the displays.
