BitLocker Smart Cards

I have been looking heavily into these smart cards for BitLocker to keep my external hard drives with sensitive information safe. obviously right now they are just encrypted with a long password via bitlocker. My question was, would it be possible to get a card reader and cards for use at home. I can not find much information on them(i.e. if i have to program them, how to program, how complicated it is to use, and where to buy the correct smart cards and readers.

As for the reader/programmer, you might have to do some serious searching as that very same equipment is/was used to hack the smart cards used in DirectTV receivers, and the subsequent legal actions taken by DTV pretty much dried up the supplies. You'd probably be further ahead to just use USB thumb drives, or only purchase computers with TPM chips.
