Blender 2.76 Indented letters?

I'm working on a project in Blender v2.76, and I need to cut into an object in the shape of letters, like the way that letter stamps do in leather working. I watched a video that showed how to do it, but found out that the "boolean" modifier no longer exists. How can I achieve this?
