Bluetooth disapointment....

How frustrating....my iPaq talks to my phone (great!). It also talks
to my PC so I can sync and browse etc (great!). Problem is, I get a
useable signal if I stand in the door-way to the lounge, but as soon
as I take the three steps to the sofa, the signal goes.....so I can't
leave the PC on, connect the iPaq via BT and browse/email/chat on it
while watching the TV....

I understand the iPaq BT range is 10m (and that is about the distance
from the PC to the sofa) and I do only have a 10m range dongle in the
PC. Would a 100m dongle make that much of a difference? If not, are
there any ways to increase BT range apart from moving the PC closer
to the iPaq? Wouldn't it be handy of someone came up with a bluetooth
'repeater' that plugged into a power socket and just moved BT signal
around the house....place one in each room and hopefully cover the
whole house. They'd be no bigger than a standard plug and would need
no maintenance......

Have you thought of a 2m USB cable to connect the dongle to the PC...making
it closer to the lounge?

Not really practical due to the layout of the office where
the PC is and the route to the lounge. A 2m cable would have
to cross the middle of the office and be in the way. To get
it to the other side of the wall would mean a route of more
like 5m around the wall.

I could do it for a while and as a temp. measure, but I was
really looking for something a bit more permament. If I knew
anything at all about electronics then I'd make my own Blue-
tooth repeater stations....it must be possible and there has
to be a market.

It would, i have x-micro 100m dongle and it works great with my 4150, i
have signal in my whole house (computer is on 1st floor), and i have BT
signal in house next to mine. I can send files on my ipaq while i'm in
that other house.

Is the BT range of the 4150 supposed to be 10m? If that is the
case then I will get a 100m dongle and hopefully it'll solve my
problems.

Well i'm litlbit confused about BT ranges... I have SonyEricson mobile
phone T610, and he can't see BT dongle from that range (where ipaq can).
I thought that BT 100m "beams" radio waves 100m and any device with BT
shoud see it, but it seams that is not the case :-(
So i think that 4150 have a longer range than my mobile phone.
I paid about 25€ (eur) for that BT dongle
P.S. sorry for my bed english :)

I have the same phone - I hate it!

The way I see it is that the 100m will transmit to 100m
away. So if the PC is sending 100m and the iPaq is able
to receive it, then to make a connection, the iPaq must
be able to transmit the 100m back. A connection can't be
made if only one device can see the other and not the
other way around. The maximum distance between two BT
devices is (as far as I know) the minimum distance that
either of the two devices can transmit to.

So - sounds like the effective range of the iPaq is a bit
more than the effective range of the T610.

Better than my Croation (?).

Yep, it looks like this is the way BT works. I did not read about BT too
much.

You could try moving the dongle a little bit. Perhaps using a USB lead (I'm
using one and I have my TDK close to the door, and it covers my whole
house).

Now for the interesting part. I have a h3970, a h4150 an an i-mate Pocket PC
Phone Edition. The best one in terms of range is the h3970. However I found
something interesting on HP website other day. Have a look on this post for
some comments on h4150 range:

I emailed HP Support about this on my 1940 and they sent this
back this morning:

----Quote----
This is with reference to your e-mail regarding the Bluetooth
Output on the iPAQ.

Please note that the settings cannot be changed as the iPAQ
automatically changes itself according to the device it is
connecting to. That is, if the iPAQ is connected to a Bluetooth
device with Class 1 power settings then it will connect as Class
1 with maximum power and if the iPAQ is connected to a Bluetooth
device with Class 2 power settings then it will connect as Class
----UnQuote----

I have a 100m dongle on order and will report back when I get it
and try it out.

Bryan, I have a 100m dongle, a 10m dongle and a 100m Access Point. I can
tell you the iPAQ range is not 100m :(

Awwww....you could have let me find that out myself and not let
me know before I even get the new dongle ;-)

Actually - if it works at about 15m, then it will do the job, but
I wonder about HP staff if they are sending out emails like that.

You probably can return the item and replace with a low powered one,
couldn't you?

Anyway, contact centres usually have canned messages and sometimes they
don't even know what is this thing really. I have my questions about this
whole "selft-adjusting" Bluetooth power, and until I get a second word from
someone at HP, I'd take this letter with a grain of salt.

I already have the 10m dongle....for the cost of it the 100m,
it was worth it to try out, even if it ends up as just a spare
one if it doesn't increase the PC <-> iPaq range.

Have you been in contact with anyone 'above' the normal help
desk and email operators? Are you waiting on the definitive
answer to this? If so, let us all know as soon as you hear any
thing!

Latest from HP support, when asked to confirm that the 1940 will
indeed work at 100m by increasing it's power when in range of a
class 1 device:

----QUOTE----
Please note that the maximum power range that is tested is up to
10M and anything more above the range you need to contact the
vendor of the Bluetooth Adapter.
---UnQUOTE---

Quite how that ties in with their previous statement, I can't see.

Well - it arrived this morning. Makes no difference at all, so
I have no idea what HP support are on about when they say that
the iPaq increases it's BT power depending on the power of the
device it's connected to. 100m - still can't get it more than
10m or so.

I'm sorry to hear that...

There is one thing that I strongly believe though... Use the right system
for the right task...

I've always seen Bluetooth as a replacement for the USB or Serial Cable...
It's not normal to see 100m USB or serial cables now right? :)

Now when you talk about LAN... then I'd go for something like 100m or
300m... and move up to Wi-Fi...

They may be both wireless products... but IMHO these two things should never
be treated as the same thing...

Also, with Wi-Fi... you get better connectivity including sharing files over
the network, ActiveSync, Internet sharing...

BT is better left for things such as connecting to a portable printer, a
mobile phone, or "beaming" business cards and files...

Mabuhay!
