Bought a broken TIVO 2 to fix...

It receives power, the fan turns on.

When I switch the TV to Video 3, the splash screen says something to the
effect of "Please wait while Tivo powers up", and doesn't go beyond that
point.

Can you suggest a (hopefully free) resource to what the start up sequence
should be so I have a better clue where to start looking.

I'm planning on ripping the box appart to see if it has drives. Then doing
research on how to install a new TIVO op system.

Suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Yeah, but then you don't learn how to fix them.

As it stops where it would load the OS from the HD to RAM, it sounds
like a bad hard drive.

http://www.weaknees.com to buy one or

ptvupgarde.com to buy the software to do it yourself.

Jack, thanks for your gentle reply. I appreciate the pointers.

It's also stupid to think that anyone cares about your opinion on how/what
others should post.

and I don't recall anyone mentioning that their time was precious - so you
must have pulled that information out from the depths of your ass.

Followup stupid Newb questions:
1) Do you have to buy the propriatary drives at weaknees.com, or will any
IDE drive do?
2) If any will do, do the drives have to be identical sizes?

thx

Any IDE drive will do.

They can be vitually any size.

Certain versions of the TiVo OS do not support drives larger than 120GiB so
you may want to do some research first or just get drives smaller than
120GiB

Any IDE drive will do. There is nothing proprietary about them.

Rule of thumb is equal to or larger than the drive from which the backup you
are restoring was made.

Weaknees does not sell proprietary drives. The sell ordinary IDE drives
with the OS pre-installed.

If you're using 'dd' or the equivalent to make a sector-for-sector copy
of a functioning drive, yes. If you are using MFStools to back up the
OS and crucial parts of the TiVo database, then no.

The destination drive can be any size (up to 137 GB for most) as long
as it is at least as big as the original drive the OS was built for.
The new drive does not have to be identical to the original when
replacing the "A" drive, adding a "B" drive, or both.

They actually sell Maxtor QuickView drives, which are designed for PVR
applications, and aren't that easy to find even online (although it is
possible).

To be honest, though, the differences (no thermal recalibration and faster
timeout on bad sector reads) aren't that big a deal if you buy a quality
drive.

I guess ZQ was saying, in his less than nice fashion, was - have you opened
the case to see if there is an HDD in place. If so, is it spinning up
normally, not at all, or making clicking noises (almost a sure sign of drive
failure).
