Broken laptop keyboard

Hi, I have a Compaq Presario 900Z. I started to have problems with the
keyboard about a month ago. Specifically, two rows of keys started to work
intermittently, they are "45RTFGVB".

At first, if I pressed the keys a few times or a little harder, it would
work fine. But recently it has gotten worse and worse. Now it hardly ever
works when I first turn on the computer.

The strange thing is, if I ever keep tapping at it, eventually it would
work. And it seems that once the keys are recognized, they start working as
if they don't have a problem at all.

I have tried replacing the keyboard, as well as installing all the patches
from Compaq, but nothing so far worked. I was told that it might be the
keyboard module on the motherboard, but I don't see how an electronic
problem would produce this type of behavior. It still seems to me that
something is loose somewhere, but I can't find it for the life of me.

Any speculation is appreciated, thanks.

Just to eliminate any other possibilities, how does you keyboard behave
if you boot dos without any memory resident programs ? If the problem is
the same and if you did replace your keyboard with a new one, what other
option would there be than a mobo problem ? Connector problem at the end
of the cable ?

Trust me, it might indeed be the motherboard. Not saying that it is,
with certainty, but it's quite possible, and if you have replaced the
actual keyboard, in fact it's probaable. But since that means a new
motherboard, you are looking at a very major repair (probably $600 or so).
