brothers laptop is beeping

Hello everybody hope somebody can help. My brother owns a Dell Studio 1555. It is a few years old and recently it has been beeping on startup. the number of beeps vary from time to time which is confusing. Since he brought it here to my place tonight it has beeped 7 times 5 times 1 time. Sometimes it will beep two sets of beeps other times just one set of beeps repeatedly and then other times the laptop works perfectly. I have looked up the error beep codes but could somebody explain them to me and why are they not consistant.

If it is a few years old, it is possible the battery is no longer able to hold a charge. When the power adapter is attached, does the charge light blink constantly?

The battery holds its charge still but the power cable was plugged in at all times tonight when we were checking it just to rule out the battery being the problem.
