I bought this lens (unused) from a company hardware liquidation. It
looked expensive, but I got it for very little money.

It is a Buhl optical lens for an Infocus Litepro 580, and it says the
following on the box:
4.5-7.7"VFL Zoom lens

It appears to replace the lens in the projector. I don't actually own
the projector, nor have I ever owned one. Can someone tell me what
this lens does, so I can describe it on ebay? Does it just make the
image larger in a shorter distance, for example?

Any idea of its worth?

If I'm reading the Buhl catalog correctly it will be a zoom tele with a
range of 4.4-7:1. This is about ten times the focal length of the normal
lens. If you put a screen 5 feet away from the projector then you would
get about a ten foot image with the normal lens or about a one foot image
with the Buhl.

If the only projector it will fit is the LitePro 58 then it's one of those
things that nobody is likely to need or want except a collector--the
projector may have been nice in its day but its day is long past.

Or, if you have a child of your own or a nephew or something like that you
could give it to them. I learned a lot as a kid from playing with handed
down optics. I had a few projection TV lenses that I had a lot of fun with.
