Hello,

I am thinking of getting a laptop. But I am running into some
problems. Mainly paying for software I don't want or care about.
Then there is the price thing.

What I am wondering what is the likely hood of building my own
lap top. I don't think I have ever seen anything to do this.

Can someone one give me a hand with this. Where to look What
to keep in mind etc.

Thank you,

TC

To build a notebook, you would need to get a barebones from a company like
asus or ecs, which would include the screen, chassis, keyboard, motherboard
(video card is usually integrated into the motherboard) battery and
sometimes optical drive. From there, you could purchase your cpu, ram, HD
and possibly optical drive and put it all together.

I don't know that that is true. Sure, you can't built it from the ground up,
but if you get the chassis, you can add the parts

Generally, this isn't possible.

After you've got the chassis, and the one LCD that fits into it, and the one
motherboard that fits into it, there isn't that much left over in the way
of "parts". Laptops are not made from standardized components like most
desktops. About the only thing you can count on being interchangeable is
the hard disk.

You can get a 64-bit laptop, new, for under $1000. The software adds
peanuts to the price when purchased in the volumes that computer
manufacturers buy.

Not nearly as accommodating for build-your-own as a desktop computer. For
example, a desktop case with power supply can be found at nearly all
computer stores - and CRT monitors are very inexpensive and widely
available. However, I've NEVER seen an empty laptop case on a computer store
shelf, and rarely on Ebay - and even then they are almost always used and in
questionable condition. As for laptop components (such as memory, hard
drive, CD-ROM drive, USB port, motherboard, etc.), they must match the
configuration of the laptop case - and they are a lot more expensive than
the desktop equivalents. As to cost, the laptop LCD monitor is a several
hundred dollar item all by itself.

So it is like buying the parts for a car and assembling it. Even discounting
the labor involved, it is much, much cheaper to buy a car already assembled.
Your best bet is to look for a laptop that is on sale, or buy a used one. I
recently purchased a very good used Gateway 400 series laptop on Ebay for
$800. It included an Intel 2.6 GHZ Pentium 4 CPU, 512 MB of RAM, a 30 GB
hard drive, a 15 inch LCD screen, a DVD/CDRW combo drive, a 32 MB video
card, and a 3.5 inch floppy drive. Software included Windows XP Home (with
the CD disk included) and Microsoft Word.

You missed the sale, but CompUSA had them in late November. Right now
they've got DECPaqards for under 1100. If you froogle "Athlon 64 notebook"
you'll find a bunch of hits, including some places that will sell you a
bare-bones with no CPU, RAM, disk, etc.

You can get new laptops, from Toshiba and HP, for $499 to $599 if you
catch sales right and are willing to deal with rebates. They are
low-end machines, certainly, but they are complete and they are not that
bad. When you think that that's CPU, motherboard, memory, LCD,
DVD/CD-RW burner, modem, network, keyboard, power supply, battery (often
a $200 battery), it's hard to go wrong.

Oh, yes, also Windows XP and various other software.

Which is fine if one wants Windows XP and various other software, but the OP
was objecting to paying for those.

If you get a barebones notebook, its actually quite easy. When I say
barebones, I mean for ex. Asus m6bne, to which you only have to add HD, ram,
cpu, wireless card. These parts can easily be found online.
