Cable audio distortion

I have my cable box connected to my TV via HDMI, and an optical digital cable running from my TV to my sound bar. Audio is great on everything else I use on my TV except for my cable box. It becomes distorted easily when something loud happens on screen. Like if a character raises their voice or screams then it will distort just enough to be annoying. It's really bothersome when I watch a lot of action packed TV shows that can get pretty loud sometimes. Is this just a problem with my cable box? Should I try and contact my provider to get a new one? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Did you try connecting the optical cable directly to the cable box to see how it sounds? This will tell you if the sound out of the box is bad or maybe its an issue of the TV processing the cable-box's sound.

No TV's have Dolby digital pass through from HDMI to the optical out so any sound you are getting via this method is always going to be downmixed to stereo anyway.

I just tried connecting the optical cable directly to the cable box and had the exact same issue. So is it an issue with the sound out of the box then? I'm not sure if this helps but this is my second cable box, my first had an issue and they replaced it with this one but this one was pretty beat up looking so do you think it could be slightly damaged or so?

Yeah if it sounds like trash out of the cable box too then its definitely a problem with the box. I would return it again.
