Can a damaged Blu-Ray Disk hurt a Blu-Ray Reader

Hi,

I was thinking about renting blu-rays movies from netflix and playing them on my ps4. I am kinda of worried about a damaged disk ruining my ps4's blueray reader though. Is this something to really worry about?

I believe only if it's really obviously damaged. Not small scratches, but chunks taken out of the side.
