can a laptop go bad after shutting it down?

I have an acer v5 551, it was working just fine 2 days ago but yesterday when I tried to open it up there was no screen. Everything was fine before I shut it down. I tried a few things, one that caught my attention is the laptop is still working even after I close the screen. How do I figure out what's the problem?
