I am thinking to buy a powerful laptop instead of a desktop computer as it seems cheaper. Is Sony VAIO Fit powerful enough to do video editing?
Here is its spec:
- Intel® CoreTM i5-3337U, 1.8GHz
- NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 735M 2 GB
- 750 GB HDD + 8 GB SSD
- 8 GB 1600 MT/s DDR3L-SDRAM

As you know is it possible to increase RAM so I'll change it to 12 later. But my main concern is i5 processor and the 735M 2 GB graphic card. Are these good enough ?

Thanks in advance

What's the pricing on the laptop? You could probably get a lot more out of an equally priced home build desktop if it's still an option, you pay a premium for compact parts so they can mash them all into a laptop shell.

Yes, mostly After Effect. Actually I am really new in video editing and all my aim is to create short teasers and demos. That all.

To me "can a powerful laptop be suitable for video editing" means it must have a quad core CPU like the Intel Haswell i7-4700MQ. Mobile Core i7 CPUs are either dual core or quad core CPUs. The quad core versions have the designations "MQ", "HQ" and "MX" all other mobile Core i7 CPUs are dual core CPUs.

The Sony laptop you have chosen is a good laptop overall, but for video editing I would at best consider it somewhat adequate. The reason is the i5-3337U. It is a low power consumption version of the i5 CPU generally meant for ultrabooks Low power also means low performance when compared to other mobile Core i5 CPUs.

I just checked some websites that builds custom computers and you are right it seems I can get better with desktops. a few questions tho.
What GPU do you suggest?! something that isn't overkilling and also not a pain. :)

Here is a list of components that I can get with the same price as the laptop. It would be really good if you have a look at it and let me know if it covers or need changes.

  • Intel Core i7 4770
    Gigabyte Z87X-UD3H OR Asus Z87-K
    8GB Corsair 1600mhz Vengeance
    1TB S-ATAIII
    Plextor 128GB M5S SSD
    22x DVD±RW
    NVIDIA GeForce GTX 650 1GB
    Wireless 802.11N 300Mbps
    AOC 23" i2369Vm LED
    Fractal Design Core

Once again thanks for your help.

I think you should look at the Lenovo IdeaPad Z series. Currently available is the 15.6" Z500 which uses a quad core Ivy Bridge Core i7-3632QM (£599.99 version). There is the new 17.3" Z710 (£799.99) which by default has a Haswell generation quad core i7-4702MQ, however it's probably a bit too big and heavy for your tastes. The not yet released 14" Z410 and 15.6" Z510 will also likely have quad core Haswelll Core i7 CPUs as well; but that is not clearly stated. The description states "Up to 4th Gen Intel® Core™ i7 processor" and the Z710 definitely has a quad core CPU. I think either the Z410 or Z510 is what you should consider, the question is can you wait for them to be released?
