Can I build my own DVR with parts from an existing DVR?

I have a "never used" DirectTV DVR. I know it's useless without cable service but I was reading that with an old PC you can build your own. My question is can I use anything on the DirectTV DVR for my project, the case, hard drive, remote, etc? Thanks.

Most, if not all of the DirecTV hardware is proprietary. If anything, you might be able to format the hard drive to install a new OS onto, but I don't know about that.

You can use older PCs as Home Theater PCs because video does not require much in the way of hardware power. Add a TV Tuner card to create a DVR.
