Can I get wifi without an internet carrier (Verizon, Comcast, etc)?

I am trying to get rid of my landline that i have with Verizon. They say I need the phone to continue getting internet service. Can I get rid of Verizon but still get internet service?

You will still need an ISP, there are "free" one, like freedom pop 500MB per month, but need to buy their device.
