Hello I have got an HP Compaq 6710b laptop running windows 7 32-bit x86 SP1 .It has got an Intel core 2 duo T7100 Processor @1.80 GHz.I was looking forward to upgarding my processor to i3 or i5.Can I upgrade it?

Not only that, you can't upgrade a laptop. With desktops, if the socket is the same, you can upgrade it. Laptops are made to only cater one type of cpu.

Most laptops and netbooks are BGA type CPUs but there are some laptops with socketed processors that can be replaced or upgraded. Most of them cannot, but there are some.

As darkbreeze said, there are notebooks that the cpu can be change, in nowadays more and more seems to be able to do that.

Starmicronics sells laptop CPUs. They should know. I upgraded my Dell. Check to see if any thermal pad is required for heatsink contact to the GPU or other components.

Sorry not i3, or i5, but there may be some quads that fit, or much faster Core2Duo. I was reading the title, and missed that part of your post.

won't be able to go quad.

Thank You all for answering. My Laptop's service manual shows how to remove the processor.Does it mean that it is socketed? Also I was considering upgrading the processor.Which one should I choose T7700 with fcpga6tray or T7700 with L2 cache.NOTE:-I need for best performance.

The top end T9500 should work just fine. I have a Dell Vostro laptop that had a T8100 that I upgraded to a T9500 (6M L2). This has Nvidia 8600m graphics, but your graphics should be fine too. As ffg7 mentioned the bios is your only concern.
