Can tin foil block cell phone reception

Hello im kathryn
Im supposed to be doing a science fair experiament about tin or aluminum foil blocking cell phone reception. Do you know if it is true or not?

For fun I placed my cellphone in a zinc or nickel plated mild steel box and called it.
It rang.
