Channel Guide & Show Starts and Stops

Hi All, Is it just me or what seemed to be a few channels not that long ago
that would start or end a show early or late, now seems to have spread to
many channels. Early this year ABC, NBC, CBS and Fox would sometimes start
or end a show late or early and you missed either the beginning or end of
the last minute or so, because the guide data didn't reflect that. Then the
guide data caught up and started showing a 0:59 or 1:01 ER starting at 10:01
or 9:59, etc. which screwed up any 10:00 starts of other shows. I know pad,
manual record, etc., but what a PIA.

Now I see TNT, FX, etc. starting and stopping shows at various times, which
may or may not be in the guide data. So...sometimes your show starts early
and your recording misses the first part or the show ends early and you miss
the last part. This seems to be aimed squarely at us TiVo/PVR users. Sorry

Yes, it is happening more, but no it's not aimed at us. If it was aimed at
us they would be doing to shows with no rhyme or reason. You'll notice it
happens on highly rated shows (being extended time slots that is) so they
can fit an extra minute of high $$$ advertising in.

They're just screwing themselves. I may simply turn the TV off when
that overlong show is over instead of watching an additional program.

What I mean, is that if the show after ER (or whatever) is one that I
don't want to watch, I won't leave the TV on NBC, yet watching
something else may not work either if I come into it too late. Under
that scenario, TV watching is over for the night.

However, there is an easy fix - use another TIVO to get that other
show ER is overlapping.

Are advertisers actually dumb enough to believe that moving the
show boundary really makes the advertising worth a lot more?

It's not the moving of the boundary that makes the ad worth more, it's the
fact that the "extra" ad is in the middle of a highly rated show, thus more
potential viewers. If commercials aired during "Desperate Housewives" are
worth $1mil per 30 second spot, extend the time period by a minute and have
2 extra commercials during the show, that show just brought in $2mil more.

Exactly.

And, put no time in between shows so that every ad is "inside" a show,
thus earning bigger bucks, because even if two very highly rated shows
are running back-to-back, an ad that is in between the two shows sells for
less than if it were inside either show.

You don't do that and I don't do that, but I've seen figures indicating
that removing commercials from between shows, even without the slight
timeshift we're talking about here, has a big effect on channel
changing. One set of figures I saw had it that 40% of the audience
began changing channels when the end credits of a show came on;
shortening the credits and starting the next show right away took that
figure down to 8%. These numbers are several years old, and people
might have gotten used to this cheat by now, but it does explain why
the practice took off so suddenly and is used universally.

Local stations generally don't even let the credits from the 10 p.m.
show run anymore; they just start the news at 10:58 or whatever. That
works for them.

I do have another TiVo for the odd time slots, but it still is a PIA. Seth
and Jeff probably have it right about the $$$ for ads, but it's not just the

By then, its too late, you've already seen what they want you to see.
Just because time is added to the END of the show dosen't mean they
saved the extra commercial(s) for between shows, it means they added
more commercials to the overall time slot.
