As a resident of "sorta China" (Hong Kong), I am not at all surprised... Who really expected it to be otherwise? ;)

The founder knows very good what the Green Dam will block.
Porn and ...the real reason for green dam...
political content such as human rights e.g. Tibet.

Porn is just a cover up to let us believe it suppose to do something good. Hopefully those dirty politicians are going to get Green Dammed themselves and have to get rid of it.

The people really should get rid of their government for this.

Surprising? Not really, they're still partially communistic, and as for overthrowing.....Leader=God because Government=army. It's hard to start a rebellion when the government in the military and the "President" has a secret police, so you don't like him? You "disappear."

What!? No porn for E-porn for China? This is clearly a violation of human rights! Nothing China has ever done before has been this sick! We must free those poor innocent Chinese people from such tyranny!

not only block adult sites, but also access to the countries gay community websites. Today reports suggest that the software will also block political content.

I never realized that China was so progressive/butt backwards that they had a large number of gay politicians. That is a surprise.

I'm also glad that they will be blocking porn...now Chinese hackers will be hacking THEIR government!!!!

Interesting this keeps showing up in news. As a Communist country you can't really expect them to conform to the way free countries operate. They really can make their own rules and laws, they don't hold need to hold anyone's hand.

Nuclearshadow, I just gave you a negative comment but upon further consideration I'm thinking my internet-sarcasm detector was malfunctioning. If so, sorry.

Not that I speak for Communism or Capitalism but just to clarify, free speech has nothing to do with either model.

I know most people associate dictatorships with Communism because those are the only individuals who have tried to run a country as such but just take it for what it is, corrupt individuals (leaders). Communism has nothing to do with 'silencing' the public but those dictators who vouch for the model take advantage of the power they acquire through Communism to control their population. In other words, leaders under Capitalist systems have tried to 'silence' their public as well as the ones under Capitalist systems. A Capitalist system isn't necessarily free from tyranny.

On topic, China is renowned for their censorship through coercion to protect political interests so, no, the topic isn't new but hopefully some headway can be made through this new initiative.

You are so wrong on this from the beginning. You need to read Adam Smith and Karl Marx to understand fundamental differences of how capitalist and communist societies function. The former is about economic freedom and private ownership, which leads to demand for rule of law, and will eventually develop into free society and civil liberty; the later is all about class warfare and control of production means as basis for wealth redistribution (to party members, of course). You can't run a capitalist society with an iron fist, and you can't run a communist society without one.

They probably filtered out Sarah Palin thinking it was porn and then just decided to go for all politicians since images of Ted Kennedy and Nancy Pilosi should be against the law as well.
