I've decided that I want to buy a set of 5.1 speakers for my computer, but don't have a lot of cash to spend. I've pretty much narrowed my choice down to 3 options.

Logitech X-530 ($75 locally)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16836121126

Logitech X-540 ($100 locally)
http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/speakers_audio/home_pc_speakers/devices/234&cl=us,en

Altec Lansing VS3251 ($60 locally)
http://www.alteclansing.com/index.php?file=north_product_detail&iproduct_id=19

I like the fact that the center speaker can rest on top of my LCD monitor on the X-540. The Altec set has a nice wireless remote with separate controls for sub, center, and rear speakers, while the X-530 seems to have the most limited controls of the 3.

From my research, it seems that Logitech is the most common choice, but the price of the Altec set has me leaning that way. I prefer to buy locally on large/heavy items because shipping defective parts back to the manufacturer can get expensive.

Any advice or recommendations would be appreciated, or if you know of any retail chains selling for less than the prices I listed above. Thanks.

Either of those sets are OK. 540 is the replacement of the 530 which I use at my living room. and it's not bad. I lay it on top of 2 yellow page book with the speaker firing upward and port hole facing front. It's a good setup especially if you have hardwood flooring.

VS3251 seems nice because of the remote. and since the Altech speakers is like creative, The sound would cryspier than the Logitech. but Logitech usually better on bass.

It's up to you to which one you prefer. They're all good and with reasonable price.

I ended up getting the Altec Lansing set, the price difference won out in the end. I'm very happy with the sound quality so far. I feel a little silly using a remote for my PC speakers but I like all the controls it offers.
