Clarification regarding 3D displays

Hi,

This is regarding Build Your Own: Wall-Sized 3D Gaming, Just Like Theaters Do It

The way you explained 3D and all, I thought there was no other cheap way to see 3D video/picture... untill today.

Now, here is a guy (works at my sister's office who is a video editor) who has goggles, one side being red-ish and the other being green-ish, and a 3D video (claimed so by him). When that video is played on any display and I have that goggle on, what I see is a real 3D-display. Though I must admit that many times I see colour distortion around edges of an object.

I am amazed how it could have happened. Can someone please explain me?

That sounds like the old passive 3D system that was invented in the 50s and has been in use for a long time. The glasses are very cheap compared to the active LCD glasses for the current 3D systems. 3D without glasses is still in development.
