Have cable tv without a box connected to my one coax input. Tv has one coax and a few HDMI. Wanted to hang an HD antenna which has coax connection as well but already used up. Is there a simple coax to HDMI converter that can be used ? Or, do I need to use a external tuner that will take the HD in from the coax and convert to an HDMI output. In that case, would I put the TV HDMI input to channel 3 and switch channels via the external tuner ?

Solution
HDMI transmits an uncompressed video signal. Transmissions over coax and over the air are compressed. So require some sort of tuner or set top box to uncompress it before the TV will recognize it as a HDMI signal.

An external tuner will do what you want. But the cheapest solution will be a simple coax A/B switch. Push A when you want to watch cable TV. Push B when you want to view from the HD antenna. (Unfortunately the frequencies used by the two overlap, so there's no way to combine them into a single cable).

An A/B switch will work, but you may have to re-scan for available channels every time you switch. Your internal tuner will "remember" what channels were available the last time you scanned. That will only match one connection or the other.
