I have a Compaq CQ61 which will not boot into Windows7. When I press the start button the laptop begins to power up, the screen stays black, the hard drive light does not com on.
The battery light shows fully charged.

1) I have pulled the power adapter and battery, held down the start button for 60 seconds-no change.

2) Attempted to start on battery with power adapter disconnected-no change.

3) Attempted to start with battery out and power adapter only-no change.

4) Rest the two memory cards-no change.

5) Attached external monitor, then with a USB keyboard and again with a USB mouse-no change.

6) Tried F8 at start-no change.

7) Tried F10 at start-no change.

8) Tried BOIS reset Windows Key+ B key at start-no change.

Please advise.

Solution
Sounds like a dead motherboard. Try turning it on with the RAM removed, if there are no error beeps or blink codes that is often another sign of a dead motherboard. If motherboard was good it would complain there was no RAM.

When I start the laptop, I see an LED for the 9-pin monitor connection. this is blinking.

It is ext to the 9-pin monitor connection.

Does this mean my display is dead or that I need to use an external monitor?

How do I check for a failed motherboard or bad OS on a Compaq Presario CQ61 with Win7?

The laptop does power on, but will not boot into windows. Failure?
The screen is black. Failure?
The hard drive light LED never comes on. Failure?
Battery light shows fully charged, new battery. ok.
Battery charging appears to be ok.
Laptop starts on battery only. ok.
Laptop starts on AC power only. ok.
Startup begins, fan comes on. ok.
Pulled battery and power adapter, discharged with power button for 60 seconds.
Pulled and reset the two memory cards. ok.

What am I missing?

Rick.
