Compaq laptop keys stuck in ALT mode

Hello,
I plugged a separate keyboard into my Compaq laptop; when I removed that keyboard and tried to use the laptop keyboard, all the keys on the right side which have an ALT character will type only in ALT mode. I can't get it out of ALT mode.

Have you tried plugging in and unplugging the keyboard again? If not, give that a try. Also, see if the number lock key is activated.

Thanks...I had already figured out that the keyboard lock key was on, which left the laptop keyboard in number lock, even when I disconnected the peripheral keyboard. I appreciate your input.
