Compaq presario cq61 running slowly

I have a compaq presario cq61, and would appreciate any tips on how to make it run faster. I'm far from an expert so I've basically been searching Google for tips. I recently used an avg clean up type program, but it hasn't really helped. I've been told to just go and buy a new laptop, but would like to see what I can do myself before spending money.

Well...

-Get a program called CCleaner - It cleans out old DLLs and unused files, but won't touch anything you have done unless you tell it to.
-Do a disk defragment.
-Clean out your downloads and recycle bin.

That's about the few really basic ways to make it run faster.

Format and reinstall windows.

Install SSD, extra memory and reinstall Windows from scratch.
