Compaq Presario laptop 1685 will not boot

hi,
Found this old laptop, OS unknown.

will not boot up, just says "operating system not found".
went into setup, all items are shown as installed (HD, mem, CDdrive etc), I selected CD drive first boot, inserted winME Cd & rebooted, but still get same error.

Any help?

try using windows 98. i don't think it's made for windows ME.

i have that laptop and it runs win98
