Compare toshiba and dell laptops

Hello,
I'm looking to buy a new laptop for my personal use/not business. I'm retiring my not too reliable Gateway. In years past I've used a Dell that gave no problems but my daughter/son-in-law are high on Toshiba. Recommendations, please.
