The computer that I just bought second hand is an Alienware 17x, if I put the service tag in dells website it gives me the warranty info for the 17 R1.
It currently has the gtx 860m card with 2gb GDDR5 ram, intel core i7-4710
The screen is full hd (1920x1080) and it has a 1tb HDD.
I can't really find a lot of info on its model and I'm not sure what (if any) upgrades it supports.

that is a revision 1, because they moved to 960m,970m,980m for the first half of the R2 and then moved to the 1060,1070,1080.

Also wanted to tell you that harddrives and ram are the only upgrades that you will be able to do on that laptop.

Hm, that is unfortunate. I mostly plan on using it for video and photo editing though so I hope that's sufficient.

It will handle it fine, but i would recommend that you upgrade the ram, to 16gb plus due to video editing. As long as your software supports nvidia gpus for rendering then you should be fine. Laptops plenty fast enough for what you want but might be getting long in the tooth for gaming.
