confused about soundbar connection

My DVD is in another room away from tiny fingers. I have just bought a soundbar. Will I get sound when watching a movie when the soundbar is connected only to the tv?

If you get sound on the TV speakers when using the DVD then you will get sound from the soundbar since it gets its input from the TV.
