Well, I no sooner found a shop that would look at my Gateway MX7120 (March 2006) than the power switch died. I tried to wake the notebook up by pressing and holding the powerswitch and nothing. I had to kill the PC by pulling the battery. The switch would not turn the notebook on so I think that pretty much says the switch is shot.

So, per Gateway, the drive is a Fujitsu MHU2100AT ATA-6 2.5" drive. Fujitsu's web site says it uses a 44-pin cable. (http://www.fujitsu.com/downloads/COMP/fcpa/hdd/discontinued/MHU2100AT_Jumpers.pdf)

Since I cannot power up the notebook, can I connect the Fuji to an ATA connector on my desktop motherboard with a standard, as in it came with the motherboard, ATA cable? Will I need to get a special ATA cable? Or am I royally screwed and can kiss goodbye the 40GB or so of data?

Thanks.

You need to buy either an external caddy or a converter cable. I suggest ebay for either!
